Calligrapher Redesigns Famous Chinese Restaurants’ Name | Write With Ink | 墨迹

Hey everybody, I am Bryan. Today on Write With Ink, we are going to re-design famous chinese restaurants’ name. I have picked two of them, Firstly, Dragon-I. In Chinese is 龍的傳人 (long2 de chuan2 ren2), in Cantonese is (long dek chuen yan). Secondly, Din Tai Feng. In Chinese is 鼎泰豐 (ding3 tai4 feng1) in Cantonese is (deng tai fung). They are chain restaurants, so probably you have seen them somewhere.

Both of the restaurants are quite similar because they are famous for the same thing. Siew Long Bao and Lai Min. Personally, I prefer Dragon-i over Din Tai Feng because their Siew Long Bao and Lai Min is tastier than Din Tai Feng, not that they taste bad but Dragon-i is better. Before going into the designing stuff, I want to take a look on their website and find out the origins of their names.

For Dragon-i, 龍的傳人 direct translates to the descendants of the dragon (long2) which is also referring to the Chinese, historically. Plus, the restaurant’s signature dish is Xiao ‘Long’ Bao. So, it all ties together perfectly, forming the name of the restaurant for Dragon-i.

For Din Tai Feng, the website does not really say anything about the name but from the motto behind the restaurant, I can see that they are striving to provide the best quality of a classic taste of ‘Taiwan’. After some research about the individual words of 鼎泰豐, I reckon that the restaurant’s name means a great big cooking wok, 鼎 means the wok as you can see from the shape of the word, and 泰豐 means big and great respectively.

This time I am going to design two small prints, one horizontal and one vertical, and one big big one for them to put it in front of their restaurant for each of them.

Here are comparison photos of the restaurants.

Here is the video about it:
